Health Promotion values and support the academic efforts of students representing all cultures and abilities. Anyone needing accommodations should contact the instructor and the office of Disability Services @ 346-1155.

Required Readings: Packet is available at the UO bookstore.
Required Supplies: Daily or monthly planner and a 3 ring 3 inch binder with a plastic cover.

Course Objectives: To build on the experiences of PHE I in order to provide health education to UO students, through developing and enhancing skills in the following areas:

1. Special project planning, promotion, implementation and evaluation.
2. Individualized health education, with the philosophy that behavior change is multifaceted and is most successful when tailored to the individual's circumstances. Peer Health Educators can assist those wanting to make health behavior changes by helping determining workable options, as well as provide accurate health information and resources.
3. Group facilitation skills involving leadership and strategies. Group facilitation skills will build on the presentation skills developed first term.
4. Outreach efforts focused on increasing student awareness and use of the Health Education Program and University Health Center.
5. Furthering in-depth knowledge within a specific health topic and increased general knowledge of the additional health areas.
6. Expanded understanding of health behavior change process.
7. Provide a foundation for cultural and racial sensitivity.
8. See health on a global level through public health awareness.

Course Requirements:
1. Staff the Peer Health Promotion Office in the UO Health Center 4 hours a week

2. Attend PHE class (Tuesday and Thursday, 2:00-3:50) consistently.
3. Participate in ALL class discussions
4. Submit a contract outlining the PHE activities that you will engage in this term. To the best of your abilities, these will be the projects that you will carry out.
5. Complete topic area competencies
6. Complete assigned readings in packet and on-line as well as view required videos.
7. Assist with events throughout the term (tables, events...) as your availability allows. (5 required hours)
8. Facilitate a 60-120 minute public health web of causation activity/discussion in class.
9. Complete a two page typed summary of your contract activities. Include a reiteration of intended projects, what you actually were able to carry out and personal reflections on the successes as well as short falls, including the number of hours you spent doing your project.

Contract: The contract, which outlines and guides your activities for the term, should be typed in 14-18 font in the form given and should include your personal learning objectives for the term:
-What knowledge and skills do you hope to acquire and develop this term as a second term PHE.
-In general, what do you hope to get out of this term from the PHE program.
" The activities for the term:
-Which projects will you be involved in/responsible for to meet these learning objective
-An approximate time line that you will follow to organize your activities and help you will stay within the nine-hour/week goal.
-Map out what you will be doing throughout each of the weeks and how much time you imagine the various activities will require.
-Include how to promote your activity, with whom you will be collaborating and any intended materials that you will need.

Attendance and participation
You are allowed one excused absence from class and one from office hours before your grade is affected, thereafter, each unexcused absence lowers your grade by 10 points from the overall 100. Two tardies (>5 min.) will equal one absence -10pts. If I am contacted before class after your initial one free excused absence you will lose only 5 points; 10 points if I am not notified before class. Please contact me before your office hours or class if you know that you'll be late or absent.

Late Assignments
Assignments are due the date specified by me either on the syllabus or in a class announcement if different from the syllabus. Assignments turned in by 4:30pm of the due date are not late but any assignments turned in after that time of the due date will be subjected to a loss of 5 points per late day.

Contract and contract summary
Your contract summary is to be typed 14-18 font and should outline both your learning objectives and the activities that you'll coordinate/be involved in for the term. Your contract summary should include a:
-report on the activities that you were involved in
-description of how you were involved with the activities
reflection on how the activities went/how you feel about the events
-compilation of hours spent on each activity
Credit for each will be based on them being typed and handed in on time. Learning objectives and activities need to be addressed involving a detailed plan submitted with time lines, a description of other people who will be involved,actual tasks that you will be undertaking and ability to take supervisory feedback.

Contract activities
Since everyone's activities will be different, credit will be based on:
effort, thoroughness and follow-through with activities
overall involvement at approximately 10-12 hrs/wk
- 4 hours class time
- **6-8 hours spent on your project and class related work**
- Total 10-12 hours

Competencies
In order to better provide specific health information to students, you will complete topic area competencies. Competencies are available in the following areas: HIV, Sexuality, Nutrition/Weight Management, Stress Management, Fitness, Cholesterol, Substance Abuse, Smoking Cessation,, Eating Disorders, Allergies and Health Center Services. These can be viewed as study guides and should provide you with an opportunity to clarify relevant areas within your selected project topic(s). You will be graded based on having them turned in on time and complete, and turning in the final version with all correct, current and cited information.

Peer Presentations
Each Peer will facilitate 1-2 presentation throughout the term. As a second term peer you will mentor first term peers through the presentation and evaluation process. Your grade will be impacted by how well you mentor the peers, follow the guidelines for having things done, and the presentation performance.

Peer Led in Class Discussion (Web of Causation)
You are required to work with a partner in choosing a public health topic and presenting a web of causation for how this topic became a public health issue. You and your partner are then to facilitate a brainstorming session with the rest of the class on this issue to come up with a possible action plan for dealing with this issue. Common topics are: Reproductive Health, Aids in Africa, Global Warming, Prescription Drug Availablity, Water Pollution and many more.

Outside Hours
You will be required to participate in 5 outside hours (10 participation points each) on projects approved by the peer health education coordinator. You will also be required to attend all mandatory trainings and activities. This needs to be typed with the hours, dates and info about the event and placed in your binder.

Grading Policy
Final grade follows the standard 90-100% (A), 80-89% (B), 70-79% (C), 60-69% (D), and 50-59% (F). STUDENTS THAT END THE TERM WITH A (C) OR LOWER WILL NOT RECEIVE A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FROM ME AND ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE ME AS A REFERENCE!!! Dedication to the program and your responsibilities in the program are very important. Hard work will be rewarding and rewarded.
